Professional Liability Insurance for Nebraska Teachers

Teach with confidence again — without the dues.

Many Nebraska teachers kept their association membership for one reason: the liability protection. Now there's a direct option. Personal professional liability coverage from $75 a year — less than one month of typical dues — underwritten by Liberty Insurance Underwriters Inc. and administered by AMBA.

For classroom teachers, librarians & instructional staff • Plans I–IV: $75–$170/year • Local Nebraska agent reviews every application

Groundless or not. For covered claims, the carrier must provide and pay for your legal defense — even when the lawsuit is meritless.

The Math

The protection you actually wanted from your dues — for less than one month of them.

Association membership offers many things: bargaining, advocacy, community. But if the liability coverage was the reason you joined — or you've already let membership lapse and are teaching with no personal protection at all — here's the comparison that matters.

Typical association route (Omaha metro example)

$868/year*
  • Local association dues — $218
  • NSEA state dues — $442
  • NEA national dues — $224
  • ≈ $88.40/month over ten months

Educators Professional Liability plan

$75–$170/year
  • Your own personal policy, in your name
  • Limits from $500,000 up to $2M/$4M
  • Carrier-appointed defense counsel
  • Follows you — including part-time tutoring

*Total annual dues as published by the Millard Education Association for 2026–27 (component amounts shown as listed on the MEA dues page). Dues vary by district and are set by the associations. This plan is liability insurance only — it does not replace other member benefits such as collective bargaining or employment-rights representation.

Why You Need It

Ordinary school days. Real legal exposure.

You don't have to do anything wrong to end up needing a lawyer — accusations are enough. These illustrative examples show the kinds of claims this policy is built for.

The reference letter

A frank comment about a former student or colleague — in a reference, an email, or a staff meeting — comes back as a defamation claim.

Libel & slander coverage

The cheating accusation

You flag a paper for plagiarism. The family says the accusation was careless, damaged their child's reputation, and cost a scholarship — and files suit.

Professional services + defamation

The placement dispute

Parents allege your instruction or assessment errors led to an improper placement and educational harm to their child.

Negligent act, error or omission

The locked classroom

You hold a student in the room over suspected theft until an administrator arrives. The family alleges wrongful detention.

False arrest / wrongful detention

The hallway fight

You physically separate two students mid-fight. One family alleges assault. The policy reimburses up to $10,000 for assault-and-battery claims arising from your professional duties.

$10,000 assault & battery benefit

The committee vote

You serve on a committee that recommends a colleague's non-renewal — and the colleague sues everyone involved. Peer-review duties are expressly within the policy's definition of professional services.

Peer & committee activities

The side tutoring gig

A test-prep client claims your part-time tutoring was negligent. Part-time, self-employed tutoring and educational consulting are included.

Part-time tutoring covered

The groundless suit

A frustrated parent sues over nothing. Even when allegations are false, defense costs are real. For covered claims, the carrier must defend — even if the suit is groundless — and selects and pays counsel.

Duty to defend

The grading dispute

A student's family claims a grade you assigned was calculated carelessly, cost them a scholarship, and take you to court to prove it.

What's covered — and what isn't. Simplified.

We'd rather you know exactly what you're buying. This is a claims-made professional liability policy for educators employed by an educational institution.

Covered

  • Claims alleging a negligent act, error, or omission in your professional duties as a teacher, librarian, or instructional staff member
  • Legal defense with carrier-appointed counsel — including groundless, false, or fraudulent suits
  • Libel, slander, defamation, and disparagement claims
  • False arrest, wrongful detention, and malicious prosecution allegations
  • Committee and peer-review activities affecting colleagues
  • Part-time self-employed tutoring and educational consulting
  • Up to $10,000 for assault & battery / corporal punishment claims arising from professional duties

  • Free unlimited retiree reporting extension after 5 continuous years insured

Not covered (know before you buy)

  • Lawsuits seeking damages for bodily injury or property damage (beyond the $10,000 assault & battery benefit)
  • Work as a principal, dean, superintendent, guidance counselor, nurse, psychologist, therapist, or administrator
  • Employment disputes — this is not union-style attorney representation for grievances, non-renewal, or termination
  • Wage, benefits, and workers' compensation matters
  • Criminal, dishonest, fraudulent, or malicious acts
  • Discrimination claims (defense is provided unless a final adverse judgment establishes the conduct)
  • Sexual misconduct or abuse (defense until adverse final adjudication)
  • Collective bargaining / union activity claims
  • Punitive damages (defense of the punitive count is still provided)

Claims-made and reported policy: it covers claims first made against you and reported to the carrier while your policy (or an extended reporting period) is in force. Defense costs are part of, not in addition to, the limit of liability. This policy is excess over other valid insurance, including your district's coverage — think of it as personal protection that belongs to you, not a replacement for your employer's insurance.

FAQ

Fair questions, straight answers.

Who is eligible?

Employees of an educational institution working as classroom teachers, faculty members, librarians, or instructional staff — birth-3, Pre-K, K-12, and post-secondary. The policy does not cover work as a principal, dean, superintendent, guidance counselor, nurse, psychologist, speech pathologist, physical/occupational therapist, dietician, or administrative personnel.

Doesn't my school district already cover me?

Your district's insurance protects the district first — and this policy is written as excess over other valid insurance, including your employer's. The difference is that this policy is yours: your own limits, your own defense, and coverage that considers your interests, including situations where your interests and your employer's may not line up.

Is this the same protection my union membership provided?

Not identical, and we won't pretend otherwise. Association programs typically bundle liability coverage with employment-rights attorney services (for grievances and contract disputes) and other member benefits. This policy is personal professional liability insurance only — it defends you against covered civil claims, but it is not a union attorney for employment disputes, and lawsuits seeking bodily-injury damages are excluded beyond a $10,000 assault-and-battery benefit. What it offers instead: your own policy, in your name, at a fraction of the cost of dues.

What does "claims-made" mean?

The policy covers claims first made against you and reported to the carrier while the policy is in force. That makes continuous renewal important. If you ever cancel or non-renew, there's an automatic 60-day extended reporting window, options to purchase longer extensions, and — after five continuous years on the program — a free, unlimited reporting extension when you retire.

When does my coverage start?

Coverage is effective on the date AMBA approves your application and has received your premium — not the moment you sign. We'll tell you plainly when you're covered. Plan on 3–4 weeks for policy delivery.

What if I also tutor on the side?

Part-time, self-employed tutoring and educational consulting are included in the definition of covered professional services — a real advantage over employer-provided coverage that stops at the school door.

How do I send you my teaching certificate?

The easiest way is to attach it right inside the DocuSign application when you're prompted — it travels with your application automatically. If you don't have it handy, finish applying and we'll follow up, or see the Supporting Documents section for how to send it separately.

Who do I call with questions — before or after I buy?

Your agent: Scott Rabourn, Close Call Insurance Services LLC — email the office. For policy service after issue, AMBA's administrator line is 1-800-503-9230.
